Getting High School Students Interested in Transportation

This afternoon, three students from my transportation course and I presented (virtually) to high school students in the Peel District School Board. The four of us did a workshop to a smaller group last fall when they visited our campus.

The teachers loved our worship and invited us to do it again with a larger number of students. We shared about interests and work as well as gave them a brief talk about transportation. We also asked them questions throughout our presentation.

Here are their responses captured in mentimeter. In summary this is what we found out:
–         Driving is the most common mode of transportation. Of course, we expected this!
–         Driving is their preferred mode of transportation, even after we gave them a scenario where they have access to all modes of transportation. This is why I look dismayed in the picture!
–         They identified traffic, cost, and pollution to be some of the most transportation-related challenges.
–         When asked what they can do to solve some of the problems, they responded: take more public transit/walk, community participation, encourage public transit, and so on. Some said, “nothing”.
We were pleased to learn some of them (although only a few) are interested in choosing a career in transportation.

You can find all the questions and their responses in the attachment.
