Technology will not solve urban issues. The best case scenario is that technology can be part of the solution for urban problems, which some of are intractable. Traffic congestion would be one of them. We call such issues “wicked problems“.
Technology has been heralded as the solution that will rid us of the malignant urban problems. Consistent with that technology hype, two recent Toronto Star articles highlight technology to solve Toronto’s traffic congestion. (Find them here and here.)

In the new op-ed that I co-wrote with my colleague Dr. Patricia Wood, we discuss how not technology but questioning governance structures and the politics of priories has a better shot at solving traffic congestion.
